Pork: The Other White Meat

According to a recent analysis by the US Department of Agriculture, pork tenderloin contains the same amount of fat and slightly less calories than the same serving of skinless chicken breast. What’s more, the same analysis found there are six cuts of pork that are considered either extra lean or lean by labeling standards. Now dieters have more options than ever to make lean, healthy choices when planning meals.

The Perfect Pork Roast

Loin, Rib and Crown Roasts are all perfect picks for holidays and special occasions. When buying a pork roast, look for cuts with relatively little fat covering and meat that is firm and pink in color. For best flavor and tenderness, the meat should have a small amount of marbling.

If you’re planning to serve a special cut, such as a Crown Roast or Fresh Leg Roast, place your order a week or two in advance to ensure that we will have the type and size of roast on the day you need it. The size of roast you need will depend on the cut. We can help you approximate the number of servings for each type of uncooked pork roast. Contact us, and we'll be happy to help you prepare!

Pork's Role in Low-Carb Diets

Many people choose to limit carbohydrates and eat more protein to lose weight or reduce their intake of refined sugar. Research has shown that diets higher in protein can be effective in weight loss and can lead to improved blood cholesterol levels. To keep fat and saturated fat intake down, experts recommend choosing lean sources of protein, such as lean pork.

In case you haven’t heard, pork is a great source of high-quality protein with many cuts meeting the government guidelines for “lean” or even “extra lean.” A 3-ounce serving of pork tenderloin has 24 grams of high-quality protein, with 3 grams of fat and – of course – zero carbohydrates. In addition to high quality lean protein, pork is also a terrific source of several key nutrients.
